Yo-yo dieting is the curse of the modern health quest. If one diet doesn’t work we just blame ourselves for the failure and try another, eternally hopeful that we’ll find one that does work. But the end result is gradual weight gain because with each cycle we invariably gain more than we lose.
Welcome to yo-yobesity!
The four battles you need to win to reset your normal:
- Battle of the Mind
- Battle of Activity
- Battle of Quality
- Battle of Quantity
An acquaintance once commented, “When I hear someone talk about healthy food, my eyes glaze over.” The message consumers have absorbed is that pleasure and health are mutually exclusive. And this is unfortunate, as it sets up a strong psychological conflict: if we eat the food we think is healthy we feel we’ve done the right thing but we’re unsatisfied and we miss our unhealthy food; if we eat the food we love we’re satisfied but we feel guilty.
Winning the Battle of Quality will show you that this line of thinking is wrong.
I use the metaphor of a battle plan for Resetting Normal because the only way to win the war on weight is to win the battles against these forces.
If you go on a diet, you cannot guarantee that you’ll lose a certain number of pounds every week because you do not have control of how your body responds to deprivation. However, you do have control over what you choose to eat and drink.
Metaphorically speaking, we all have a little metabolic gremlin, and it has a mind all its own. Cut your intake too drastically and it responds by s-l-o-w-i-n-g itself down and r-a-m-p-i-n-g your appetite up.
Winning the four battles and conquering the final frontier does not mean you will never, ever overeat. But that’s ok….revel in the fact that you can accomplish your weight goal without engaging in a Major Project and turning your life upside down. It’s easy and it’s sustainable.
Helpful Resetting Normal tools
In the book I suggest several tools to help with the resetting normal process: forms that you can fill out to start your changes and track them. These tools will make more sense if you have read the book, as it will explain the context around what they mean. If you request a copy of the Workbook (a pdf document) you will find them there and you can print them. I include them here as well for your convenience. And if you haven’t read the book, but are curious, feel free to check them out.
